The WD drive seems to work and DiskUtility finds nothing wrong with it. I am, however, dreading the update. You may be sure I will physically disconnect all external drives before updating. The scary/ironic part is that the WD drive is the one with the partition on which I keep a bootable backup copy of the OS, i.e. It's the one that's supposed to be there to boot from if an update goes wrong. What I'm really worried about is that I've deleted SmartWare a few times and it always comes back. I have the feeling that perhaps there's some way-too-clever stuff on the WD drive itself that executes when the drive mounts and reinstalls Smartware or something of the sort.

Haven’t responded at all on any of my messages. Will be looking out for other external drive manufactors next time.

You might also want to shorten the names of the folders on your computer. If this isn’t enough, you may want to look into finding a different application which puts the files from your backup into a single archive file. Also, the file names you describe sound like system files, not just data files. The default software settings that comes with the My Book drive doesn’t do a good enough job of backing up files to be able to restore a whole computer. Consider just backing your data. You can always re-install the operating system and your applications. Latest skype for mac 10.6.8.

In an attempt to remove the WD firmware from my WD Passport Essential, I cannot unlock my drive. I have downloaded the virtual disk image (WDSmartWare_Mac_Disk_Image_PP4R2_1_3_0_18), but the unlocker.app isn’t on there. Is there any way I can unlock my drive, and hence mount it? I already have the SmartWare installed, but my Mac can’t even detect the drive. So i am unable to go to the drive settings. It isn’t even present in Disk Utility or on a PC.

Click “Connect”. I don’t have a Mac so I haven’t tried it. Hopefully this means something to you and it works.

After I connected the drive to my laptop with the included USB 3.0 cable I was off and running. I just accessed the drive in File Explorer and double-clicked the WD Apps Setup file. After a moment, the WD Apps Setup wizard, shown in Figure A, appeared on the screen. Figure A The opening screen of the WD Apps Setup wizard shows all the tools that come with the My Passport Ultra. In addition to WD Backup, the package includes a security tool for password protecting your drive, as well as drive management and status tools. However, to keep myself from getting sidetracked by other bells and whistles, I ran a Custom install and just selected WD Backup, as shown in Figure B. After all, I just wanted to back up my data files.

If you backup your photos with smartware, my understanding is that they will only stay there as long as they exist on your computer. If you then delete the photos on your computer, I think they will also be removed from the My Book drive as well.

I had used it on some client sites before that with great results and actually used to use back in the days of Windows XP when they offered a free download promotion. Anyway, it’s up to you. I don’t get anything if you purchase it. I don’t have any affiliations with the company.

Hi Sam, Glad you found the thread. The reason you are experiencing problems is because Windows actually as a limitation of 160 characters in a file path (folder+filename+slashes). Since the backups are stored in subfolder, the paths end up too long and, as you’ve experienced, some files end up failing to backup. So what can you do about it? Why have 5 individual buttons when you have a box that can do it all? Please make it so we can switch between the two remotes or something because this defeats the purpose of a remote on your phone. I feel like I'm using a difficult version of the regular remote because I can't feel the buttons. Now instead of swiping or tapping a large box that knows what I want it to do, I have to look at my phone and make sure my thumb is still where I want it to be.

Windows 10 • Click on the Search button and while on the search, type store and select it. • While on the Store, type WD on the search bar. From the resulting list, select the WD app. • The WD app Overview, Details and Reviews will open up, providing information about the application.

It feels like the app is old and it’s a bit slow. The navigation bar is divided on photos, music and videos. These should be filters not navigation. The animation on screen transition feels sloppy specially the search field. The fact that we can’t rename WDSync folder really bothers me but I can get over.

Hope this helps. Best regards, Michael. Hi Rob, Thank you for your question. I suspect that your computer is trying to start up from your MyBook drive. To change that, you will need to go into your computer’s BIOS and set it so that it doesn’t boot from your external USB device. Once you’ve made that change, your computer will stop trying to startup from your MyBook hard drive.

So if you restore your files from the backup onto your new computer, you will likely end up with copies of files that had been moved or removed. If you don’t mind that, you’ll find your backup files on the MyBook drive under the WD SmartWare.swstor in one or more of the sub-folders.

So then I have to scroll all the way through all the listed pics to get back to where I was looking. Kind of a pain, because I usually have no idea where i was since you can’t see thumbnails of the pics in the list (thumbnails would be nice). Also, it might be nice if it would show an extra low res pic initially. I know you can tap on the HD button to get the full quality, but even the mid-range quality pics take a long time to display, even with a pretty fast device and connection. So the problem is that if you are trying to scroll through pics to find one, it takes forever because there aren’t any thumbnails to help you find the pic, and it takes so long to load each individual pic one by one that it takes forever.
