Reviewed May 28, 2015 by, Editor in Chief (twitter: ) Editor's update, Nov. 2016: read and watch our review of the late that replaces this model. Perhaps if I win the proverbial lottery or we reach our 10 millionth YouTube subscriber, I'd be able to buy the 15' MacBook Pro with Retina display dressed to the max with upgrades without sweating blood. I use a 13' Retina MacBook Pro for work, and as someone who spends a great deal of time editing photos and video, the 15 inch model's big screen and powerhouse quad core processor would be perfect. Priced at $1,999 with integrated graphics to our $3,200 review unit with the new AMD Radeon R9 GPU and a 1TB SSD, the big Mac isn't for everyone.

Next, whether you as a laptop user want to operate the audio controller, system management controller or an SSD controller, you will find a variety of discrete controllers consolidating into a single one. Besides providing improved security via enclave coprocessor, Apple T2 Chip allows you to open any of your favorite apps, get answer to your Google search query or play your favorite movies, search for files in the device easily by saying only ‘Hey Siri’.

Photoshop, Lightroom, and many other photo processing tools run much better when you have a good computer. That machine you bought online for $200 last Christmas is simply not going to work well. You can make due for some time, and you should for as long as you can. But when processing a shoot takes twice as long as it should because you are CONSTANTLY waiting for your computer, or the display connected to your computer is not good enough (1080p HD is NOT enough), you will want to do something about it. At the point when you have decided it is time and the next photography investment you are going to make is a new computer, think of it in the same you think about investing in a new lens and be prepared to spend as much in a lot of cases. Check out the last part of the article here on recommendations of what the minimum hardware should be in both Mac and PC computers to make editing photos go well. Why Should You Listen To Me?

The entry model has an Intel i5 processor while the higher end models have an i7 but no matter the model, solid performance is not lost. RAM can only be upgraded up to 16GB. The starting model only has a 256GB SSD built in hence, you’ll need to rely on external storage devices. A 2.5inch HDD drive can also be added with some assembly required. 2. ASUS FX502VM-AS73 The is yet another slim laptop that packs a punch.

The new Mac Pro is far more of a specialised machine built primarily around FCP X and Open CL compute driven applications where as the old one was more of a general purpose pro machine and because of the standard PCI-E slots could be made to perform for gaming - obviously not enough to satisfy the more hardcore gamers with their custom built gaming PCs but certainly well enough to handle the current/modern titles for most folks enjoyment. If you are looking at current new Macs only then I agree the new Mac Pro, whilst it can run games OK, unfortunately the dual GPUs it has can only be taken advantage of with games if running Windows so for an OS X gamer the iMac is certainly the better option. It's just a shame there is nothing with a more powerful GPU available when running games in OS X to make a step forward from the older machines. To be fair it's probably not too much of an issue now whilst new titles primarily target the latest consoles but it could be soon if there is a step up in requirements and we often still face the added hardware demands with ports not being quite as well optimised and OpenGL performance bottlenecks. There is hope however that Metal may help in some cases here. At the end of the day we need Apple to realise the potential in the same way they have with iOS and much progress could be made towards being a more main steam gaming solution.

Gaming

Which can be useful for boot issues. As long as you keep the old card for diagnostics, OS X installer, &c.

For years, Mac gaming has been almost an oxymoron - not really worth considering if your love of games extends beyond Football Manager. But things are changing. Big games are coming to Mac quicker and quicker, instead of arriving three years later or not at all.

Of all Apple’s products, the Mac Mini, Air, and new MacBook are the least suited to gaming since their CPUs are clocked fairly low, in favour of long battery life. The processor only runs at 1.1 GHz in the case of the entry-level MacBook, and there are no options for discrete graphics cards. Don’t count on it playing anything but old and lightweight games. The Mac Pro At the other end of the spectrum is the Mac Pro.The Mac Pro is a workstation and isn’t aimed at gamers, but it’s without a doubt the best Mac for gaming you could buy. It starts at $2,999—not exactly an impulse purchase. It comes with dual AMD FirePro professional GPUs, rebranded as D300, D500 and D700 cards.

As far as the user experience is concerned, I am pleased to announce that you should not have any issues that could break your experience. All in all, I really like how the Lenovo IdeaPad 710S has all the basic needs that I could require from a laptop, and on top of that, it can even run the Mac OS without any issues whatsoever. So what if something as uncommon as micro HDMI is not working. Because every other feature is working, and it will give you the same great experience you could want from a good laptop coupled with the famous Mac OS X that has become a favourite for many people now. Pros • Excellent performance regardless of the OS you are running on it.

Packed with an Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ, you’ll have enough processing power for large music arrangements and recordings. On the contrary, it only packs 4GB of RAM in which can be upgraded to 16GB only (max). The battery is a plus on the Pavilion if you like to do a bit of writing out of the studio. The big thing to shout about with this machine is the fact that it has a dual storage option. With the capability of having an SSD and an HDD, you can put your programs on your SSD and dump all of your plugins and VSTs on your HDD which can be upgraded up to 2TB.

Even though I had a lot of experience with computers, I didn’t have a lot of experience with photo editing software and understanding what hardware actually makes a difference. So I did quite a lot of research and was able to do some testing to see specifically what makes a difference. Unfortunately there are too many PC manufacturers for me to recommend a specific model. I don't think in the PC world there is actually all that much difference between them. Some PC makers do better at customer support than others, although even that seems to change depending on who you ask. I will say that I doubt any of the PCs you find in a box at the store are going to meet your needs.

We also suspect that AMD was able to deliver 5K monitor support, and that Apple might have a 5K Thunderbolt display in the works. Apple states that the M370X 15' MacBook Pro can handle a single 5120 x 2880 display at 60Hz, including Dell's 2-cable 27' 5K display. The M370X can also drive single cable 4K 4096×2160 displays at 60Hz-- both the 5K and 4K 4096×2160 single cable @ 60Hz are firsts for an Apple laptop.

Desktops also tend to last longer because heat is an enemy to computers and laptops are in such small packages their heat battle is going to be lost faster. Think through this one very carefully.

And we all know a few fanboys who buy every Apple contraption as soon as it goes on sale. Gaming on a Mac may be more restrictive than with a desktop PC running Windows, but if you choose the right Mac hardware, and are willing to pay for it, you’ll be able to play most games without issue. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to gaming on the Mac, covering everything from the best Mac hardware for gaming, to using Windows Boot Camp, to the mice and keyboards you should buy for Mac gaming.

OK, so bottom line is that either can work fine, but you have to spend the money to get the hardware you need. Really this article is mostly for the PC user who are into photography. If you are a Mac user, I doubt you are tempted to switch to a PC because you are a photographer. In fact, you may be a Mac user because you are a photographer, and that is great. You Mac users may be interested in the end of the article where I provide recommendations on which hardware upgrades are actually worth the money to make sure it can do a good job editing photos. Now for you PC users.
