1. How Do I Make An Em Dash On Google Docs

Step 1: On the Google Docs window, point to Tools, and then select Preferences. Step 2: Insert a double hyphen into the vacant box under Replace. Now, add the em dash into the box under With using the Alt-0151 or Shift-Option-Hyphen (on Mac) keyboard shortcuts. We’ve all been there. But no longer!

How do you type an em dash? The hyphen, double hyphen, and minus sign are encroaching on the territory of the em dash with increasing frequency in recent years. In the massive digitization project, Google Books treats hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes as the same character, translating them all into “–.” Neither the en nor the em appear on standard keyboards, making them even harder to use.

En dash mistakes The most common en dash mistake is using dashes when you’ve already opened with a range-defining word like between or from—that is, a word that does the same job. You don’t need a belt and suspenders. Incorrect: The botanical garden is open from April–November. Correct: The botanical garden is open from April through November. Incorrect: In Crete, the springtime temperatures vary between 45–70 degrees. Correct: In Crete, the springtime temperatures vary between 45 and 70 degrees.

Use your operating system’s character map. Using you operating system’s search function, type in “character map.” A grid with symbols will pop up, and you can select the em dash or en dash and copy and paste it into your document. In Scrivener, you can access your operating system’s character map by going to Edit, Character Map. In Word 2010 and up, you’ll need to go to Insert, Symbol.

So here is an em dash for you to copy: —. Select that dash with the cursor, and press the Ctrl + C hotkey to copy it to clipboard. Then open a Google Docs document, select a place on the page to paste it to with the cursor and press Ctrl + V.
