Can i use an external mac dvd/cd drive on a toshiba laptop? I'm attempting to use an external dvd/cd drive on a toshiba laptop that does not have an internal drive. The toshiba laptop recognizes the device, i can see it in the control panel; however everytime i insert a cd, it does not accept it. These drives support DVD & CD for data/playback and allow writing (burning) of discs for backup, data sharing, even for Audio, Video, Photo discs that can be played / watched in standard DVD/CD players.
All the other DVD drive has slots in them where you can enter the Disc, kind of like a SIM Card Slot. But this DVD Drive has a Disc Tray where you can put the Disc, and then press the button on the Drive to insert the Disc in the Drive. 
If you are a fan of this function, then you should definitely buy this Drive but be advised that this DVD Drive is a bit thicker than the other Drives mentioned here.
If the computer won't boot from a USB device, how could I use than, a USB DVD player? I mean, isn't that a USB device? Your computer will see and mount a USB device once the computer is booted. You can use the USB DVD drive to play movies, restore from backup etc. However, you cannot insert the install disk in the external USB DVD player, hold down the C key and boot the computer from the install disk in the external USB DVD drive to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility, or to reset an admin password if you have lost or forgotten yours, or if you decide that you wish to reinstall your OS.
